The CoCo Hut
The most (legal) fun you can have in 8-bits.
For collectors, gamers and hobbyists of the
TRS-80 and Tandy Color Computer.
Take a TRS-80 Color Computer, a five year old, a two
year old, Mom and Dad, hook 'em up to a big TV and
what do you get?  Family CoCo Night!

At my house, CoCo night is always a big hit. The CoCo
can do things modern PCs can't.  It's simple, it's
portable, and the chunky graphics and funny sounds
are just right for the younger set.  Plus, Dad actually
gets to play with his Color Computer for a change!*

Naturally we mostly play games, but drawing programs,
matching programs and such are also lots of fun. The
older Disney titles from Radio Shack are a hit. And
educational, too.  I learn all sorts of new stuff.

The kids give me a chance to stretch the outdated and
moldy programming muscle. ECB makes it easy to
make a quick doodle program, a Mr. Potato head, a
Lite Brite, or a quick flash card program. Graphics
displays entertain the two year old, Allison, quite nicely
and she laughs hysterically when Daddy's guy gets
squashed in Donkey King.  She's got kind of a mean
streak in her. hmmm . . .

Here's some shots of our Family CoCo Night.  Send in
some from yours and I'll include them here!

* Try programming with a two year old threatening to yank the MPI out of
the slot by pulling on the power cord.  Not fun!
Daddy and Kenzie play Popcorn from Radio Shack. This has
always been a favorite. It can seriously make you nuts. The
pacing goes from super slow to mind numbing fast. You can
thank
Steve Bjork for that.  Thanks, Steve, for all the years of
making me insane.  It's worked out nicely.
CoCo playing is serious. Gotta get your game face on.  Oh
yes, the CoCo.  It's an upgraded 64K 26-3003A with a Micronix
keyboard. It's a good ol' F-Board machine and it runs like a
beast.  Good keyboard by the way.
Max plays Space Invaders. This is the Spectrum Associates
version.  Plays pretty true to the original, though seems a little
easier to me.  Then again, I haven't played the arcade version
in, oh, it wasn't THAT long ago (25 years or so, maybe).
You can never start a CoCo Nut too early. MacKenzie, 5, uses
our newest CoCo to draw, play games and "type." Typing like
Mommy and Daddy is very important and the super sturdy
keyboards on the CoCo are perfect for little hands to whack
away on. :) I don't recommend it on your suped-up CoCo 3!
A quick ten minute stint with ECB and you've got a nifty doodle
program. Max's (MacKenzie) favorite color is orange, in case
you hadn't guessed. The program just INKEY$s the arrow keys
and SETs colored points on the screen. The number keys
change the color by VALing the INKEY$ input.
